Reality Check: Faux Creations on Etsy

Handpicked on Etsy
Faux is fun: It tickles the funny bone and sometimes fools the eye. Faux is the French word for fake or false. Whether artisans incorporate imitative materials or make faux objects entirely from scratch, they either attempt to closely replicate the imitated item, or they intentionally design the object to to look obviously fake as a whimsical or ethical statement. Today's showcase features both approaches, illustrated by very real looking pebbles, carved jade, carved stone, and suede -- all fabulous fakes. On the purely whimsical side, we have imitations of lampwork glass, a fossil, and the classic woodgrain motif of faux bois. Finally, over-the-top faux fur and fantasy leather are fanciful and, to many, more ethically correct than using animal skins. Click on the pictures to go directly to these Etsy listings. Prices from $12.00 to $72.00.
Today's featured artisans include: tundradear, Maladora, ChartreuseButterfly, HautTotes, JEBabyGuebara, AdornJewelry, storiestheytell, iamcr8ve, TheRefinery, StonehouseSupply, WickedlyGoodWares, ballandchain

You also have to see the brain bracelet in Maldora’s shop. It is over the top, and the boot covers, what a novel idea, but the moss pendant from AdornJewelry really made a dramatic impact. I just had to visit the shop to see the other moss creations there.

I really appreciate Andria’s collection as always but this time I was particularly pleased to find that almost all of the shops were new to me and I really appreciated visiting all of them.

Thanks for pointing out the fascinating brain bracelet, Colleen! I continue to be amazed at what some artists accomplish with polymer clay -- from totally "out there" novelty statement pieces to startling realism.
