Stripes are alternating bands of contrasting colors and/or texture that run in the same direction, either precisely parallel or in wavy, organic bands. They are the building blocks of tartan designs --in America referred to as "plaid" -- which I will save as another day's topic. The variations in stripe patterns are broad not only in color, but in that they may be petite in scale and restful to the eye, or bold and lively depending on width and rhythm based on spacing and repetition.
