Ingredients Exposed: Can you say Honey?

If you read this on a product label, would you think it is bad? Monosaccharides fructose, glucose, disaccharides, oligosaccharieds, proline, flavinoids, acetic acid, butanoic acid, formic acid, citric acid, succinic, lactic acid, malic acid, pyroglutamic acid, gluconic acid, ascrobic acid, pinocembrin, hydroxumethyflurfural.

"If you can't pronounce it, it must be bad" is a cliche that has become a mantra for many who believe it is more healthful to avoid hard-to-pronounce ingredients thought to be unnatural. The fallacy is that everything in this world can be analyzed in the laboratory to determine its chemical composition. Not all of the words are one syllable or easy to say.

Sounds like awful stuff you'd never feed to your kids, right? Well, it's honey.

BTW: What got me thinking about this is the ingredients I've researced for use in my Piacere Sensuale fragrance collection.

Piacere Sensuale: Rethinking my jewelry store

I let my listings lapse into expiration, and all those unsold designs are now assigned to oblivion. Some have been given away as gifts, and some are destined to be dissassembled for parts. Sadly, my designs were simply never going to sell on Etsy, and so bye-bye to that disappointing phase in my creative life.

Loathe to simply close the shop, I first gave it a facelift to better suit my new direction of tapping into the sensibilities of the mass market. Alas, Etsy buyers feel safe with creations that conform to mass market trends, so that is where I shall take my shop going forward. I made up some earrings that I hope will appeal to more buyers. I've also included my artisanal fragrances, which leads me to another story.....

When it comes to perfume, I've always had trouble getting past the initial "assault" of commercial fragrances. Too often it takes an hour or more to soften and dry down to "Act III" featuring the basenotes -- the subtle, earthy foundation that interacts with one's body chemistry. Last year I began mixing my own fragrances and used my favorite commercial perfumes as reference points. In some cases, after much reading, sleuthing and testing, I've managed to capture many of my favorites in most ways except for that horrid "assault" scene in the opening act. By infusing my blends into a pure & natural carrier like jojoba oil, I've eliminated that nasty blast of alcohol. I've also not used commercial fixatives, opting instead for lovely, subtle oakmoss to fix my notes.

Social Marketplace: The Buzzing Bustling Bazaar of Etsy

Traditional marketplaces bustle with social interactions between friendly competitors and customers. The virtual Etsy marketplace has captured some of that character with recent site changes such as circles and the new treasuries.

Now that Etsy has enabled a much wider range of work to appear in treasuries, artisans are less dependant on bloggers for promotional mention. Members can now easily generate their own showcases to promote each other and themselves, and so I no longer feel as motivated to use this blog for highlighting undiscovered artisans since they can easily do that for themselves anytime they wish.

And so, my new direction for EtsyLounge will be a little more personal, featuring my treasuries and including occasional personal reflections about the artisanal life. I hope readers will chime in with their own thoughts and experiences, share links to their own blogs or stores.

Favoring good pearls and brass filigree finished in wonderful patinaes, and inspired by nature and history, she combines components in unique ways that charm the eye and often reference the past. Arja is a professional textile technician by day, and a self-taught jewelry maker and magician with knitting & crocheting copper and silver wire on her own time (20-30 hours weekly.) In her words, her designs reflect, "A fusion of influences from nature, art of the ingenious Sami people of Lapland and Kalevala folklore to Celtic aesthestics, steampunk and contemporary design." I also see romance and a little Victorian influence when I browse her store. DiademJewels: Faerie Inspirations on Etsy

Some weeks ago I invited the featured artists of EtsyLounge to fill out the interview questionnaire at the bottom of this page, and DiademJewels is our first responder. She blogs and sells her wondrous creations on Etsy. Both sites are a feast for the eyes. The artist/designer is a 23 year old biology student with a penchant for belly dancing, steampunk fashions and geeky conventions. Inspired by faerie lore, nature & flowers and Greek mythology, she imbues her designs with romance and mysticism. The craftsmanship is most impressive, especially given she is self-taught. Her favorite materials are sterling silver wire, faceted stones, freshwater pearls, crystals and lampwork beads. Gamboge is a familiar term to most artists who paint, denoting yellow-brown hues that come in tubes of artists' pigments. Originally derived from gamboge tree resin, the range of colors reminds us of mustard. Beautiful as a stand-alone hue, I also love what it does when used as an accent in a color scheme. A painter might cover a canvas with it before beginning to compose a landscape composition, a weaver might throw in a pick of it here and there, or a designer might use it for striking accessories to add punch and warmth. Storque Yourself: An Invitation to Followers of EtsyLounge

I've been reviewing my goals for this blog, which started out last year as an effort to boost the truly artistic, unique and the very best of Etsy. What I've hoped for is more interaction, which is what generates synergy for all of us.

So, I'm thinking the way forward is to create a Storque-like feature, in which featured artisans who've chosen to follow EtsyLounge can promote themselves and give us a more in-depth look at their work, their studios, their goals, their story.

My question for you: Would I have your support if I put the time into creating opportunity for you? I know many of you have your own blogs, but as we all know, it is the linkage that raises our SEO ratings and thus, it is through interaction with other blogs that we create internet synergy.

Mulligatawny Soup: Bon Appetit with Etsy foodies and artisans

My favorite meal-in-a-bowl is mulligatawny soup, the hearty 18th Century British concoction created by Indian cooks who served in English colonial homes. Below is my favorite, truly scrumptious recipe -- get out your your shopping list, special spices, tureen, bowls and ladle, all found today on Etsy's search pages in prices ranging from $3.00 to $150.00.

East Indian Mulligatawny Soup

Ingredients:

1.5 lbs skinless chicken thighs (preferably bone-in)

Flour and cooking oil

4 tsp. Curry Powder (hot or mild, depending on your taste)

1 tsp. ground ginger

1/4 - 1/2 tsp. hot red pepper flakes

1/4 tsp. ground cloves

1/4 tsp. ground black pepper

1 quart chicken stock

1 cup each chopped carrots, celery, turnip, parsnip, tart apple

2 cups diced onion

3 or 4 cloves minced garlic

2 cups (or 1 can) garbanzo beans, drained and rinsed

Finish with:

2-3 tsp. grated lemon zest

2 Tbsp. lemon juice

1/4 cup chopped cilantro or Italian Parsely

Optional: Salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste

Directions: Dredge chicken in flour. In a large nonstick skillet, heat 1 Tbsp. oil over medium heat. Add chicken and all the spices to the skillet and cook 5-7 minutes, turning the chicken to brown it. Transfer these ingredients to a slow cooker or heavy soup pot. Deglaze the skillet with one cup of the stock, and transfer that the the pot. Add the fresh vegetables, apple, garlic, beans and remianing stock to the pot, and mix gently to combine. Place a piece of foil lightly atop the ingredients, then cover the pot tightly. If using your slow cooker, cook on low for 5-6 hours. On the stove, cook on lowest flame for 3 - 4 hours.

At serving time, add some salt and pepper to taste if needed, and stir in the lemon zest, lemon juice and cilantro or parsely. NOTE: If you prefer a vegan version, add more garbanzo beans and veggies in place of the chicken

Saint Patrick's Day is March 17th, a festival originally associated with the color blue. In the 17th Century, the shamrock, which was supposedly employed by Saint Patrick as a teaching tool to explain the Holy Trinity, was adopted as the symbol of the holiday, and shamrock-green became the iconic color. What began in the middle ages as a religious holiday honouring St. Paddy, evolved into a day of feast and gradually became a day of revelry, parades, beer drinking and, throughout the Irish diaspora, a salute to Celtic roots and culture. In modern day America, our custom is to wear the touch of green or suffer the penalty of getting pinched. If you hear a sound and concomitantly sense a color, you have a rare condition known as synesthesia. An example might be the musical note middle C provoking you to envision the color red. Such perceptions are involuntary physical responses to auditory stimuli versus examples of conscious response to sensory input. For whatever reason, the word synesthesia popped into my mind today and led me to wonder what I'd find searching it on Etsy. Indie versus mass produced: The issue has been much debated on the Etsy forums, and I'm among the many who would love to see the Etsy administration re-affirm its core value by either banning mass-market goods that are unaltered by the artisan, or by creating a separate category for factory-made, just as they've done for vintage. What inspired me today was a convo from a buyer who's been a fan of my shops, and who got so frustrated when she was shopping on Etsy the other day that she stopped searching and created a treasury to show her support of true indie design, showcasing the items featured here today. Halloween is a festival celebrated with costumes and masks. Today I look at romanticism from the perspective of "trepidation and awe" in which artists invite nature to thrill, titillate, raise goose bumps and send a chill up the spine. 18th Century Romantics weren't merely having a bit of fun with the occult or spooky. They were taking an intellectual stand against a clinically scientific, rational way of viewing and categorizing the world. Emotion, precisely because is was not rational, was embraced by these artists as a source and goal of the aesthetic experience. Endeavoring to elicit strong emotional responses to their works of art and literature, the Romantic Movement not only addressed melodramatic themes of love, yearning, loss and sentiment, but also themes including supernatural powers, and nature's power to evoke a mood, a sense of foreboding or wonder, or literally wreak havoc with a poisonous flower or its stormy turbulence. These aspects of nature would remain mysterious and out of our control, despite scientific advances in our knowledge and understanding of it.
